Jaundice is when your skin or the whites of your eyes turn yellow caused by increased amounts of the chemical bilirubin in the blood (hyperbilirubinemia). Jaundice can happen with various health conditions and commonly indicates a problem with the liver.<\/p>\n

Jaundice generally happens when the level of bilirubin in the blood exceeds 2.5-3 mg\/dL (milligrams per deciliter). Jaundice can be caused by various medical conditions, some of which are serious and potentially life-threatening. Any person who develops Jaundice needs to undergo a complete medical checkup to determine its cause.<\/p>\n

Types of Jaundice<\/strong><\/h3>\n

There are 3 different types of Jaundice. They are based on where the issue with bilirubin starts.<\/p>\n

Pre-hepatic Jaundice<\/strong> is caused by an issue with the blood before it gets to the liver. If a blood disease or condition causes too many red blood cells to break down at once, then there is high amount bilirubin in the blood than the liver can remove.<\/p>\n

Hepatic (hepatocellular) Jaundice<\/strong> is caused by a problem with the liver. If the liver tissues are damaged or scarred (called cirrhosis) and the liver can\u2019t work properly, it can\u2019t make bile to remove bilirubin from the blood.<\/p>\n

Post-hepatic (obstructive) Jaundice<\/strong> develops when the bile ducts are blocked or damaged so that bile can’t get into the intestine to be removed from the body.<\/p>\n

Hepatic and post-hepatic Jaundice that may be caused by cancer.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

There are lots of possible underlying conditions and causes of jaundice and some of them are serious, They include:<\/p>\n

Side effects of certain medications
\nGallstone disease
\nExcessive Alcohol consumption
\nGallbladder or pancreatic cancer
\nCirrhosis, which is a disease that causes scar tissue to replace healthy tissue in the liver
\nHepatitis or other liver infections
